Enjoy some great country music in Urunga

13 Jan, 2009 09:03 AM
Enjoy a relaxing family friendly afternoon listening to live country music on the banks of the beautiful Kalang River on Saturday January 17th.

The music will start at 4pm and go through until 8pm. Featured artists include Heidi Holland, Ken “Chainsaw” Lindsay, the Sommers Family Band, Dusted Jeans, Linda Robertson, the Chris Cook Band, Freya & Erika Cross and Kathryn Pitt.

Ken “Chainsaw” Lindsay is both a story teller and a singer/song writer. He always has a yarn to tell you but his favourite way of telling a yarn is through the bush ballad. "Chainsaw" has his popular radio show on Hastings Community Radio 2WAY FM, filled with songs from Australia's finest bush balladeers and country music artists.

From Dorrigo a younger version of the Sommers Family Band will be appearing at Urunga. Although some of the children have grown and gone their separate ways this family band continue to perform at various venues and festivals. Angela 10, Matthew 12 and Alex 15 are joined by mum and dad and you will hear fiddles, mandolin, guitar, double bass and an old timey banjo.

Linda Robertson began her passion for country music from a very young age, growing up on the family farm in Central West NSW. Linda along with her husband and two daughters now reside in Urunga. Linda sang in a band for nine years, singing a wide genre of music and now due to family and business commitments enjoys singing socially...

The Chris Cook Band is the latest North Coast Band featuring well-known vocalist, song writer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Cook who plays guitar, banjo and fiddle with John Tester on double bass and talented newcomer Jared Hyland on drums. All three members play and sing in a wide variety of styles, described as energetic “country rockabilly with a splash of bluegrass”. They combine a wealth of experience and talent which will entertain North Coast audiences who will remember their tight harmonies, their energy and their choice of music played at sensible sound levels, long after hearing them perform.

Dusted Jeans are students of ‘Nat’s Fun Singing’ in Bellingen for 5 years. Abbi Bradshaw (10yrs), Clancy Menzies (12yrs) , Gina Balenzano (10yrs) all from St Marys Primary School Bellingen. Together they have been Dusted Jeans for one year. They have performed at Country on the Coast Urunga last year, Relay for Life 2008, Coffs Harbour Markets, Bellingen Bowling Club, Youth Week at Urunga and at Dreamz Concert at the Memorial Hall in Bellingen. But the biggest achievement of the year was grabbing 2nd place at the Sawtell RSL talent quest. The girls have incredible voices for kids so young. Together they are something special.

Freya and Erika Cross are also students of Nat’s Fun Singing Bellingen and Bellingen High School. They have been travelling to Tamworth to perform for the past four years. Last year they were popular performers at Country on the Coast, Relay for Life, Youth Week, The Dreamz concert and Carols Urunga. They are a fantastic vocal combination that offers something different.

Heidi Holland began her musical career as a backup singer in a totally forgettable Elvis tribute show. Heidi is a now a graduate of the inaugural College of Country Music and has completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Music majoring in Vocals at Southern Cross University. Heidi is now a highly trained and experienced musician whose style draws from many genres including Jazz, Blues and Country Music

Kathryn Pitt “Simply Brilliant” is one of those rare musical performers who has an innate ability to move through a variety of musical forms with consummate ease and make each style uniquely her own. When you know the background of this extraordinarily talented young lady, you can understand where Kathryn Pitt is coming from and more importantly, where she is heading! On stage since she was five years old, Kathryn quickly developed into a teenage yodelling sensation who mesmerised audiences with her uncanny vocal ability. That prodigious talent has already built her a huge fan base from her three yodelling albums, major festival and concert billings and numerous T.V. performances. As a multiple award winner and Australia’s youngest Australasian Country Music Awards (Golden Guitar) finalist, Kathryn really has no need to prove her talents on paper – what she does best is deliver the real proof in both recording and live performance. Her superb voice combined with wonderful interpretations of material ranging from classic and original yodels to soulful ballads or the cutting edge of country rock makes her one of Australia’s most versatile performers. Throw in her wonderful harmonies and deft bass playing and it all adds up to a complete musical package.

Pack a picnic and a rug or chair to sit on, make your way to the Morgo Street Reserve at Urunga, then sit back, relax and enjoy the entertainment!

I am a Brisbane based gutarist and played on Heidi Holland's first CD in the mid (?)1990's. I often wonder what Heidi was doing musically, as I really enjoyed her material and playing on her recording at Murdo McRae's Murdifications studio . I look forward to a reply Sincerely PHIL WRIGHT(guitar/bass/teacher/author )

Hey Phil! those sessions at Murdo's seem a lifetime away! I'm currently here in Urunga, surrounded by my family, who have lived in the area for 4 generations. I teach music part time at one of the local schools, sing and write a bit, run a bellydance supply business and generally enjoy this heavenly part of the world. How did you find this site? Are you local? Cheers from Heidi
