Dorrigo’s cancer survivors walk proud

10 Nov, 2009 09:06 AM
More than 200 local residents joined the fight against cancer by walking around the Dorrigo Showground Oval over the weekend for Dorrigo’s Relay For Life.

“What an incredible weekend,” said David Hitchcock, Chairperson of the Relay For Life organising committee and winner of the Miss Relay for Life 2009. “We should all be exhausted but the committee and I feel completely exhilarated by what we saw on the weekend.”

The Committee, was also overwhelmed by the community’s response to the event. “I have never seen anything like it,” David said. “More than 18 teams walked around the oval, many right through the night.”

“The highlight for me was that so many turned up despite the flooding rains which say’s a lot about Dorrigo’s community spirit and support for the relay.” David said.

To date, Dorrigo’s Relay For Life raised over $27,000 for the fight against cancer with the figure set to increase.

Ted Greenwood, Community Relations Coordinator at the Cancer Council’s Mid-North Coast regional office, says that Dorrigo should be extremely proud of their town’s effort.

“What a spectacular event! The Dorrigo community was not put off by flooding rains and everyone pulled together to make this event such a success” said Ted. “David Hitchcock and his entire organising committee volunteered their time and energy to make Dorrigo’s Relay For Life an amazing experience - they should take a bow.”

“Money raised through Dorrigo’s Relay For Life will help the Cancer Council improve the lives of local cancer patients and their families through initiatives like the Support and Information Pack which put patients in touch with the closest sources of support,” said Mr Greenwood.
