Bottled water companies win fluoride battle

21 Jul, 2009 09:19 AM
Bottled water containing fluoride is expected to hit shelves within six months in a move that has irked anti-fluoride crusaders.

Australia's food safety authority decided to allow the voluntary addition of fluoride into packaged water today after lengthy appeals by the Australasian Bottled Water Institute.

Bottled water companies argued that lifting restrictions would increase consumer choice.

It is understood several will now move to include the chemical, which boosts dental health, in their products. The first bottles will hit shelves in less than six months.

Meanwhile, fluoride is expected to be added to the Bellingen shire water supply shortly.

General Manager, Mike Colreavy said testing and commissioning of fluoridation equipment was delayed by flood. “It is now expected to be completed in July.”

“It relies on the availability of specialist staff from Department of Water and Energy being available for final approval before it will be switched on,” Mr Colreavy told the Courier-Sun.

Anti-fluoride advocate Keith Oakley denounced the move to add fluoride to bottled water, saying it would make it harder for him and his colleagues to access water.

He said the move would also backfire.

"If they want to put fluoride in there, then that's their problem. But bottled water sales will go down," he said.

"It's a bit disappointing but at the very least it should be labelled so I can still buy non-fluoridated water."

Mr Oakley is a resident of Geelong where the most recent fluoride battle took place last month. He said the options available to opponents of fluoridation were getting smaller.

Since the introduction of fluoride into tap water last month, he has been buying bottled water and is trying to install a rainwater tank at home.

The Bottled Water Institute, which has been advocating fluoridated bottled water since 2006, said its campaign was driven by a need to offer customers with non-fluoridated water supplies a choice.

"We're expecting any sort of negative response to be limited ... but ultimately the market will sort itself out," chief executive Geoff Parker said.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand will permit the addition of fluoride to non-carbonated packaged water to between 0.6 and 1.0 mg on the proviso that clear labels are also provided.

Meanwhile, the fluoride debate has been described as reaching levels of "health terrorism" in Victoria.

Anti-fluoride extremists have been blamed for a hand-delivered death threat to state MP Lisa Neville. Police are also investigating threats to blow up the city's water infrastructure.

All state capitals have fluoridated water. Brisbane was the last to introduce it into the system this year.

Opponents argue fluoride is a poisonous industrial by-product of fertiliser with lasting and harmful side-effects.

Looks like Australia is going backward. The addition of fluoride will make the people even dumber and more backward. Sad.

I buy bottled water to keep from consuming the poison sludge fluoride. Fluoride causes APATHY. The Facist and Communist Nazis and Soviets used it in the drinking water at their prison camps to keep the inmates under control. Most of American cities use it in their drinking water. Is anyone beginning to make a connection here.? Just do research on cities in America where the citizens have tried to have the poison taken from their public water supply systems. Things that make you go hmmmmm......

Fluoride makes people stupid. They need people to be stupid so they dont see the sign in the heavens coming to wreak havoc on the Earth.

This is crazy considering this just happened: European Court Ruling spells an end to water fluoridation http://www.infowars.com/european-court-ruling-spells-an-end- to-water-fluoridation/

Bizarre to say the least. WHY would the bottled water companies be so determined to put a dangerous chemical like fluoride in their water? It's an industrial waste product. There are studies dating to the 40s showing its toxicity. Look up Christopher Bryson and the "Fluoride Deception", for example. The idea that fluoride prevents dental caries is utterly laughable. There's no evidence that any dental benefits are derived from ingestion of fluoride. In fact, there's a lot of data now to make a strong case that fluoride is not only useless for prevention of cavities but that tooth decay declines in prevalence and severity in areas that stop fluoridating their water. http://www.holisticmed.com/fluoride/nyscof030905.html And where's their business sense? You're supposed to make products, cost-effectively, that people will want to buy. Why go to the additional expense of adding a chemical to their products that many of their customers don't want and will not buy, while concealing its presence from those potential customers who do want it but won't know it is there?

In actual fact, flouride is a poison and is considered neurotoxin by the military and there are also over 30 animal studies showing that fluoride is a neurotoxin which reduces learning and memory. Essentially, fluoride makes you a bit less intelligent.

I love it how health advocates are demonized by the word "extremists". How unbiased. 98% of Europe does not use water fluoridation. Many countries have banned it outright. Recent research demonstrates clearly that drinking fluoridated water does NOT prevent cavities. The same research shows a growing list of harmful effects. There have been significant developments in policy and in the research which are worth noting. For example, Health Canada now states that prescribing controlled doses of pharmaceutical grade fluoride under the care of a doctor is no longer recommended: "Health Canada does not recommend the use of fluoride supplements (drops or tablets)." Health Canada, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the US Environmental Protection Agency, have not been able to find any chronic toxicology studies to demonstrate safety of the actual products used in water fluoridation systems after 60 years of use. The American Dental Association recommends that children under 12 months of age should NOT consume fluoridated water. A recent review in The Lancet describes fluoride as "an emerging neurotoxic substance" that may damage the developing brain. Unbiased reporting?

Pllease people , do the research yourself and don't buy into the line " ...but it's good for the children..." That one is getting old and tired . The water supply should not be medicated and people should have a choice . If you want flouride , add it to your own water and not everyone else' water .
