An early morning meating

03 Nov, 2009 07:30 AM
Valley Meats at the top end of the Bellingen CBD had an unwelcome visitor in the early hours of last Wednesday (October 28). A 22-year-old male was driving his ute west at 2.30am when he failed to negotiate a right-hand bend and mounted the kerb. The car slammed into the front of the butcher shop, causing extensive damage to the shop front. The driver was breath-tested by police and returned a positive reading.

Police were appalled by the general behaviour in the Bellingen CBD on Friday and Saturday nights. A large number of youths were detected consuming alcohol over both nights which contributed to numerous incidents of alcohol related antisocial behaviour. A large number of adults were also found drinking alcohol in the CBD – which is a designated Alcohol Free Zone. The actions of these adults who continue to drink alcohol and loiter in the CBD contributes to the antisocial behaviour.

The underage drinking problem in Bellingen is a community issue, not just a Police problem. All parents are urged be aware of where your children are, who they are with and what they are doing, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. Remember, it is an offence to supply a minor with alcohol and heavy penalties apply.
